There are many standard volunteer opportunities available on a regular basis at The Salvation Army. Additionally, many volunteers share specific skills with us on a volunteer basis - some provide hairstyles and haircuts for our clients while others tutor adult students preparing for GED testing. If you have a skill you would like to share, but don't see a volunteer opportunity that uses that skill, feel free to ask the Volunteer Specialist about the possibility of starting something new.

How to get started

Traditionally, volunteers begin by attending a Volunteer Orientation class (schedule of classes found here). The class takes about an hour, and is held at the Worship and Administration Center located at 10291 McGregor Boulevard. Please call (239) 278-1551 to register for a class and confirm the time and date. In orientation attendees complete a volunteer application, get an overview of local operation, and individual assistance to select a volunteer opportunity if needed.

Current Volunteer needs

Office/clerical assistance

Duties vary by location. In some offices there is a need to make telephone calls, data entry, file forms and paperwork, shred documents and light cleaning. Other locations may need help answering telephones or other administrative duties. Experience with MS Word and Excel is desired, as well as business experience. Offices are open Monday through Friday typically from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. If you are seeking a recurring volunteer opportunity, this may be for you.

Food Pantry

Volunteers are needed to restock the shelves in the food pantry. Some lifting and bending is necessary on this assignment, as well as reaching and stooping. The ability to work as a team member in a small area is a great attribute for a volunteer interested in this position. These volunteers interact with others, including staff, pantry clients and other volunteers.

Drivers

Safe drivers with clean driving record are needed for various projects throughout the year. Sometimes CDL licensed drivers are needed. CDL drivers are sent for a DOT physical and administered a driving road test. Passenger endorsement is a definite need. Projects include driving buses for camp, special events and church events - driving box trucks for donation collections and food drives.

Family Stores

Volunteers can help in many ways at our Family stores. They put out new merchandise, sort clothes, help tag merchandise, keep the stores clean and neat and so much more. With three locations, there is a Family Store not far from you!
