The canteen (mobile kitchen) has been checked and approved road-worthy for travel. The trailer has been stocked with food and supplies. A crew has been contacted and told to be ready at a moments notice to leave Ft. Salvation Army: Its “soldiers” in the trenches providing food and medical care to quake victims

The Fort Myers Salvation Army office receives daily updates on the relief efforts in place to help rebuild Haiti after the devestating earthquake. Just yesterday, The Salvation Army, an international organization, gave a five-day supply of food to nearly 7,000 people. Hundred of others, including infants at an orphanage, received medical care from Salvation Army doctors who are responding to the earthquake. In the U.S., more personnel and supplies are being sent to the country to join the 700 Salvation Army workers who are permanently stationed in Haiti. Find out what we're doing and how you can help

With only 14 days left to ring (December 24 is the last day), The Army is only at 41% of its 2009 goal. “Our goal this year is $600,000, an increase of 10% over last year’s fundraiser. The needs through the year on the other hand, have increased 45%. Because of the increased goal, we are asking for the community’s continuing and increased support. It’s not just Christmas needs, but the needs of thousands of families throughout the year,” explained Major Penhale.

We still need: Volunteers, Turkeys and all the fixings, toys/games/books for children, and donations to the Red Kettle.

Holiday Assistance Remains Level

Salvation Army sees increase in repeat registrants (FORT MYERS, FLORIDA) — The number of families that the Salvation Army helped last Christmas was record setting. With the unemployment being in the double digits, The Army was preparing to set another record this year. “Over the six days of registration, we took in 2,306 applications. Record Breaking Number of families Register with The Salvation Army for Holiday Assistance

(FORT MYERS, FLORIDA) October 29, 2009 — The Salvation Army continues to see all time high numbers set an all-time record today with the number of families registering for the 2009 Christmas Cheer program. Registration began on Wednesday, October 28, with staff and volunteers registered 673 families for the first day, followed up by 439 families today. Today’s totals bring the two day count to 1,112 families.

“Not only are we seeing high numbers, but we are also seeing a record number of families who have never had to ask for help before,” said Major Art Penhale of The Salvation Army.

“There are many families who can’t make ends meet and truly don’t know what to do for their children this Christmas,” added Penhale. The Army is expecting to see registration numbers continue to rise through the next two week’s sign up process. Read More

For the 2008 school year, over 60% of all Lee County students were enrolled in this pivotal program. At Bonita Springs Elementary, 90% of their 450 students receive free or reduced meals. For the majority of school children, when school is not in session for weekends or over the summer break, they often go without meals and essential nutrition. Read More

Grant award from Ace Hardware will allow Lee County Salvation Army to renovate much needed transitional living facility

The Salvation Army of Lee and Hendry Counties recently received some great news. The agency is one of the recipients of a very special grant award from the Ace Hardware Foundation grant program entitled New Faces for Helpful Places. Since 2004, Ace Hardware, Ace’s “Helpful Hardware Man” Lou Manfredini and local communities have been working together to provide assistance to local “helpful places” across the country. The group provides the capital and resources needed for successful renovations and needed repairs on local facilities. Read More
